I can just picture them begrudgingly packaging and sending the coin out while cursing themselves and you under their breath. Like the $50+ coin I won for $8 yesterday. I know the school-of-thought is to start at 0.99 but in this case it backfired. On the other hand I detest, as a buyer, having to return a coin. I've now had to 4 times and it soooo stinks! Plus I'm out the shipping ( in 2/4 both ways ) and the time. In one case I asked the seller to cancel and refund before he sent me the coin even - when I discovered he uses stock pics and he admitted the one being sent wasn't the one in the pics. But he sent it anyway and I had to pay the shipping back! Stock pics should be banned!

Stock pics are definitely a red flag. There can be some wonderful deals had on ebay. I have often done well. I have also been burned. Just picked up some Walkers Under melt yesterday.

You have to be alert too... I passed over this dime because the pictures were small and terrible and it's a common coin. I was going to ask the seller for a better picture because it looked like a really good strike, maybe even full bands, which is actually quite rare on 1945-P Mercury dimes. For $9.95 and free shipping, somebody else had already snapped it up. In hindsight I could have taken a chance on it at that price. I mean, I waste that much money when I order a pizza delivered because I'm too lazy.

Reminds me of a seller that puts a sticker on the 2x2's that hold the coins he sells, stickers that say "For the price of two pizzas". I thought that was a little weird to put on a 2x2. I'm sure some of you here know what I'm talking about.

Stock pic listings, yeah I avoid those also. Only taken a chance on one once (not on ebay) with a low value coin but it turned out well.

Quote: FB, chances are nill. Yeah, but even from the pictures I can tell it's a strong strike for the date and there is at least a hint of separation between the bands. Most of the ones I've looked at hardly have bands at all, let alone split even partially. And you're right, there was no risk with that one, which is why it went so fast.

I've often wondered about how a seller feels about the price, especially when it's below face or 75% of melt after shipping and fees are factored.
But the final price is not determined by the winner...it's determined by the runner up!

true texasmick, unless it is a sniped 1-bid deal.
I sometimes get amused at how "influenced" some bidders are by the description. They'll overpay on a Good grade coin that is labeled FINE in the description and then undervalue a coin that says VERY NICE ( as if that means VF ) that is really AU55 quality. It's like some folks just believe what is said, and don't/can't grade for themselves! I see buffs described as VF and XF with absolutely NO HORN on the reverse all the time. And some folks pay XF prices for them too.
