Hey guys A couple months ago I purchased a 1880 Morgan dollar on ebay with the craziest toning I had ever seen. The seller claimed that the coin was naturally toned and also gave it the grade of MS-60. To me its no loss if the toning was not a natural process, but it would be nice to clear up if it was indeed toned in an unnatural way and if it is a mint-state 60 coin. Thanks, Solace-ian Edited by Solace-ian 08/03/2011 3:15 pm

I think we're talking about an 1884-O New Orleans minted Morgan based on the photos. The only year a "D" mint mark would be found is the final year of mintage - 1921. The coin does look uncirculated, but that toning is over the top for a natural occurrence IMO.

Absolutely AT. Nothing new on ebay. Seller claiming these are natural when in fact, his other auctions are all like this.

My apologies, I had a similar coin in mind when I created this topic. This is indeed a 1884-O Morgan dollar, haha. Any way thanks for the info guys!

You gotta love some of these ebay sellers. They have 200 coins for sale and all 200 are "rainbow toned". I wonder if coins that are at will eventually lose that toning? What will they look like in 10 years? Anyone know?

Oh, by the way, that coin looks better than 60 to me from the pic. Maybe 63 (not taking into account the AT of course). Very hard to say for sure from a pic though.

I dunno, I have a Morgan with that same kind of blue that I know for a fact was NT.
The reverse Hue is fairly Consistent also. I've seen morgans with a similar coloring that lived near the ocean on the east coast.
Could it be Natural? Maybe...
Probably not though.

Keep in mind, the colors of toning are a progression. It is very rare indeed that those colors don't start at the rim and progress inwards; you'll see some with "crescents" and "textile" toning due to various factors. The blue on this coin is an advanced stage of toning, "older" than the reds and yellows. Therefore, the toning started where the blue is - extremely unlikely for a Morgan under any natural process. The disconnected areas of similar color are, to me, another dead giveaway.

The "burnt gun metal blue" running down the center of the obverse as well as the 3 spots by the E, and the spot above the 1 of the date, all point to AT. This coin is doctored without a doubt.

you can easily remove the artificial toning by deep the coin. But be careful you can easily remove the luster also.Only deep it for 4-5 seconds and then rinse it with clear water
