My guess: Someone was selling sissors and knives door to door and used the "fantastic" sissors to cut a penny for effect. I have seen this done.

I agree with John1 and PlumCrazy81. Another case of PMD. This time from someone taking a pair of shears to it. Thankfully, at least its not a key date:).

but it could be a key variety if it has a doubled die on the reverse.

It's just damage.

I vote PMD also.

I used to cut around Lincoln with my tin snips and sell them to people for a $1. I did this for years on job sites until Sears quit replacing my snips. They were losing so much money to sheet metal workers like me that they quit carrying Craftsman snips and started selling cheap snips without a the lifetime replacement guarantee.
