In going through rolls and trying to fill a dansco I am running into a condition issue. I have not dabbled in halves for very long but I am at a loss for what a top condition 70s era half should look like. I am finding some with near new looking reeding and a nice luster in the obverse fields but the patch of hair around the "part" is always dim in detail. Is this just how they were struck? If anyone has a good pic of a non proof 70s era half they could post it would greatly help me understand if I am seeing nice condition coins or just run of the mill ones. I just find it odd to see the field and reeding to be so pristine yet the hairline lack so much detail. As always, thanks in advance :-)

That is typical for the Kennedy half. Not much detail at all in the hair.

If I am not mistaken there are a lot of spots where detail usually lacks on a Kennedy half
the hair, the reverse where the designers initials are, I'm sure others have a much better list lol

Googoo is correct, they were just an all around poorly struck coin in my opinion.

Most of these are poorly struck but they shouldn't all be. It's easier to believe you're seeing coins with light wear though it can be very difficult to differentiate between weak strikes and wear.

Wear always starts at the high points of a coin and erodes deeper and deeper. Tip the coin sideways between your eye and a light source back and forth and the high points will seem to just rise above the surface. Wear appears as a light greyish discoloration on the high points. If only some high points are discolored like this you might suspect weak strike. Weak strikes often has more of a granular appearance while wear doesn't.

On the '70's era halfs the reverse high point is the shield. Look at the top of the shield for marking and wear. Even gems will often have light marking on the top of the shield as this is very fragile here.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
