Very Cool. I think it's die gouges or maybe Feeder Finger Damage. Neat find.

Even though it was damaged, I think it is way cool.

The coin itself is not damaged, just the rev die that struck it. The damage was caused by a feeder finger(metal plate that moves planchets to the dies) dragging across the die so that does indeed make it an error. I think it is a bit unusual to see the damage covering almost the entire reverse, very nice

Very nice find! Haven't seen anything this dramatic, but you can tell it came before the final strike because the lines pass through the devices of the coin.

Wow--that is really dramatic! The die was probably retired from that much damage.
Rest in Peace

biokemist6, thanks for the explanation. I really don't know much about how coins are made but I have a small collection of what I think are error coins and I am always eager to learn about the process.

bournepiper, I think my best error coin would be a chipped penny. Your coin is very cool and it makes me want to keep searching!

As others have remarked, the reverse die has heavy die scrapes from a feeder finger. This example is about as severe as they get. Nice find.
