So I am 99% sure that this is a real 1777 Bolivian 2 Reales. But this chop mark is quite interesting. Any information would be appreciated!

Definitely a genuine 2R... Doesn't particular look like an Asian chop (though they do turn up on the smaller pieces occasionally). Not sure it's along the lines of the Caribbean island countermark issues or anything like that, or even any recognized merchant counterstamp. Probably some local issue, perhaps some metalsmith way back when messing around with a punch.

A nice, clean perfectly toned piece, at any rate.

realeswatcher- Thanks for the input! So do you think that this chop would affect the value at all? (I still really wish that the chop could be identified...but if nothing else, it looks cool).

I wouldn't think the stamp has any special territorial significance, and like I said, it doesn't "seem"(?) to be a Chinese/Asian punch... Maybe a slight bump in value from someone else who finds it interesting, or thinks (knows?) it can be traced to something? I'm sure the "damage" doesn't hurt the value, anyway - it's a nice "original" piece.

This is a very rudimentary way of looking at it... but my general impression (especially for stamps that aren't from a geographic entity, such as merchant marks) is that the more ornate/interesting the stamp, the more people pay for them. I just saw two pigs on an Indian cent go for $150 the other day! Apparently it's a well-collected style...

To me the design appears to be 4 distinct strokes using a tapered punch (triangle) applied to make a cross like mark. The punches are not aligned at the center and are of obviously different depths so it was NOT a single punch. That in turn means it is unlikely to have been repeatedly used on a number of coins.

The coin appears real but UNLESS someone can attribute the marking as authentic from the period - I would likely class it as altered (damaged) for an unknown purpose.

The effect on value depends on the individual looking at the coin of course. But unfortunately such a simple mark could be very easily duplicated on any low grade 2R - so a "High" value is very unlikely.
