Hi guys,

With all the hype I've recently decided to start buying silver coins and bars. I've always wanted to start a metal collection, but never acted on it. I figured now is as good a time as any.

I have some newbie questions I was hoping someone could shed some light on.

I just bought this item off of ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWAX:IT (Swiss of America 1oz)

It says it's 1 troy ounce .999 fine silver. I got it for $40 plus $5 shipping which I think is okay compared to other websites.

I just wanted to make sure "fine silver" is 100% pure silver.

Also, does anyone have tips or suggestions on where to buy for the future?

Thanks!

Thanks guys!

I'll try to register for that rebate. How did you get it?

I've looked on APMEX etc, but the shipping is what usually kills the price. I'm not going to be buying tons of coins at a time so the price for 1 or 2 coins/rounds increases a lot w/ their shipping costs.

Glad I found this forum!

I started out just buying junk silver, and also 1 oz silver rounds. Then I began getting interested in all the history and beauty of coins in general So, I'm now hooked. I love some of the commemoratives. No expert at all, but from what I've seen many do increase in value, and some are really pretty in hand. I love the detail in the ones I have purchased so far..........spent a lot on ebay, looking into that rebate idea.

Yes most places will add to your price per oz with shipping on small orders. While not a fan of ebay that is probably a good choice along with your LCS, here after 50 post, and other places such as coin shows. Don't forget jewelry stores sometime you can get ASE at a low premium plus they may have some rounds etc. It all depends on the premium when you are buying.

Good Luck and I know you are going to be looking at you first silver every day for a week when you get it.

@Mkfarm

You are so right! I can't wait to get this in the mail! I feel like this is the beginning of healthy addiction.

May I ask what ASE is?

Looking forward to the coin shows that come here in the fall.

Whoops, nevermind. ASE is American Silver Eagle. Are they 1 ounce of .999 silver? What would be a decent price to buy them at?

Our government claims to guaranteed they contain one troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver. Just having fun with the Feds today.

That is a great questions on the price. Most place will try to get $2-$4 over the spot price. However if you can find the right person you can get them from SPOT -$2 over.

I'm a bullion person so I buy as few as I can with high premiums.

Don't forget there is a ton of other silver out there so the closest to spot that you can get the better that you did.

You got a really good deal. You picked a good time to buy: silver is starting to shoot back up now.
The best thing to do is just keep your eyes open. If you look around, you can still find deals on "junk" silver. It's getting more difficult, but it's still out there.

What do you guys consider to be "junk silver?" Where is the best place to buy it. Do you think it's a wise investment/collection?

I use Provident Metals for most of my silver purchases, or buy from folks here on CCF.

Local approaches other than your local retail silver/gold coin shop you can try Pawn shops....

Checking local Pawn shops is a great way to find a deal close to spot on silver. An check back every week or so, as new things are comin in all the time....

I found a new little pre 90% silver an a few colored ASE's at the Pawn shop at the bottom of the hill, an he will let them go for 40 each. I am not buying right at the moment, but just somthing to check on if you got time drivin by....

Loon22, good deal if is real allot of fakes on ebay, personally I hate ebay myself.

If I were you I would try and find a one or a couple local coin shops where you live they usually sell at spot or close to it.

Everyone I would think has their own likes when it comes to silver. Mine is mostly in modern day bullion coins issued by governments such as the ASE, Maple, Panda etc. On addition I buy a lot of US 90% silver coins from 1964 and older.

If I can get a good deal for silver rounds marked .999 etc I will take them too. I even have a few silver bars.

In addition I go out of my way to buy and Morgans when I can find a good deal. Though I don't buy slabbed / graded ones.
