I've accidentally found an interesting variety, not listed in Charlton.

I was wondering if anyone has seen it before.

Its a 1872 50 cent, with heavy doubling of the N and D in CANADA,

and light doubling of numerous other letters, including DEI, A in VICTORIA, G in GRATIA.

Not hub doubled, punch doubled imho. Individual letters punched by hand vs when the die is originally being created with hubbing or hobbing? Nice coin.

Thanks Zonad...still learning...

The D and N are quite off...the D is especially impressive. First one I've seen.

As for the DEI and other letters with the slight doubling, is that also punch doubling (same process) ? Almost seems like a re-cut die ( DDD)?

What about the A in REGINA? That looks odd too.

Here is the rest of the legend.

The GRATIA is entirely doubled...on REGINA just the "E". In VICTORIA, the "T" and "A".

Is it possible for all these doubled letters to be the result of punch doubling by hand?

This coin has essentially "Doubling around the clock" :)...

That is interesting. Gratia does seem like hub doubling but the others, not so much. I have seen lots of variation on the 1872H 50 cent pieces as far as doubling goes. A thought I have had is perhaps sometimes they may have brought out a old worn logo punch and repunched the complete word on a die? On your coin it seems the V has been punched with two different sized V's. Regina appears weak like on the 1881 one cent coins and 1881 25 cent coins where letters are missing portions because the punch used to make the die is worn and letters are weak or broke. We don't know all the methods or tricks they may have used when dies or punches were worn to get a few thousand more strikes out of a die or a couple more dies from a punch. Do you have any of the books by BOSOX?

Not yet..but I am going to contact him to get some.

I started out with only a passing interest to get some of the rarest large cents in the back of Charlton, but I'm getting sucked in fast. :)

I'm just afraid of going down too deep into the rabbithole :)...

It is possible to have hub doubling (GRATIA looks like it) and many repunched letters on the Obverse of a Victorian 50 Cent coin.... A friend showed me an 1870 LCW that exhibited both.... The hub doubling showing a similar degree/direction of offset on parts of the legend and the repunches can exhibit any offset..... Very nice Variety coin.

Canada 1872-H 50c also exists w/possible unlisted doubled "TS" in "Cents."
