MY first thoughts were that this was a late die state strike.

Then I thought it was counterfeit.

Now I don't know.

It weighs 12.3 grams, normal should be 12.5, close enough.

It passes the tissue test.

Its not magnetic.

Any thoughts.

metal detected or in-ground find; was in contact with something corrosive to silver; had a subsequent rough cleaning.

I also think it was buried in the ground, for a good long time.

Sounds like a good guess.

As an archaeologist, I have seen similar ground find coins before. Corrosion builds over the years, and if not properly removed will leave the pitting and distortion of the fields you see on the Walker. However, buried silver USUALLY does not corrode so easily unless it is in contact with other metals. Without knowing the provenance and context of the coin, it would be impossible to say for sure.

Regardless of how it happened, it is a mess now. Might be a good conversation piece. You could tell people this was found on a buried treasure ship sunk by pirates in Lake Michigan.
