For the past few weeks I have been setting on $650.00 that I am planning on using for a key date morgan, 1889CC, 1885CC, 1880CC, ect. I have been searching different coin websites, along with E-Bay and understand what grade this amount of money will buy. I need all the CC's except 1878CC,1879CC and the 1884CC. My 1878 and 1879 are in F-15 and the 1884 is a GSA MS-64 so if I have thought I could collect the remaining CC's in F-VF. My problem is I am having a hard time convincing myself that I will ever be able to collect all the Morgans. I look at the price of these coins and I think to myself, I could get 2 of the more common dates of Morgans for the same amount as one of the CC's. I have also been thinking about skipping the CC's and start on the "S" mint marks that I need. I have a list of all the Morgans by date, and I started at the top, 1878 and have been working my way down, I am down to 1884-S (skipping the CC's). I guess I am looking for some opinions and guidance from some of you members that have been collecting these wonderful coins alot longer than I have. Have any of you had second thoughts on what you are collecting and how you are going about it?

Just to throw out a thought - if you're "set oriented," how about limiting it to a date set or a mint mark set? Much less intimidating. A CC set will be a pretty solid long-term investment, as well.

Interesting approach ..." I started at the top, 1878 and have been working my way down"

Could be a fun way to collect.

My suggestion would check your online stores .. this site .. coin shops and shows for any of the CC or S mint coins you still need, if one pops up for a good price
jump on it.

With time and planning I believe you can acquire all the Morgans you need for your collection. Just take your time and wait for the good deals.

For me I go to a lot of coin shops and coin shows and look for the best deals on any of the coins I need. I like your idea of putting the money in a fund ($650) for your keys.
Having the money available when a good buy comes along really helps.

As for how I am doing it. For example

Earlier this year I put together a Dollar date set. It looks like this is the start of me putting together a complete set of Morgans.

Today I bought a group of 22 Morgan dollars. I have a buyer
that will buy any Morgan or Peace dollars. So I picked out
five of the 22 I liked and will sell the rest.

I also heard of a 1893 S from a private collection and made a opening offer. Many of the harder dates, you just have to be ready when a good deal comes along.

Yeah I did also but ended up selling most of the others and got stuck in the 1878's

"Stuck?" You are in the deep stuff with '78's, my friend.

Thanks for the advice. I know that some of these Morgans are just going to be completely out of reach for me but that is true for any "set" that you try and build. When I first started collecting I was a type collector. Maybe I can look in that direction. I do not have a Twenty Cent Piece or a Trade dollar. Thanks again,

My usual suggestion is to try to find coin shows in your area. If none, consider finding some somewhere. When you are at a coin show you may well see a large variety of what you are looking for rather than taking whatever is on ebay.
At some rather large coin shows, like the one in Illinois this weekend, many, many dealers have many of those.
