I am a little confused. I purchased a Morgan dollar from a coin shop today for $34. It was in a small container of what she called "used" dollars. Now, I am only buying coins to stick in my collection. My goal is to have 1 of each that looks in decent condition. But just for yucks, I checked this date & mint to see what it is selling on ebay for and I see some people buying them from $50 to $150. Why is that? And what makes mine $34?

Condition , 1886-o is on the verge of being rare. According to numismedia, AU50 will put you around $70 and MS60 will put you around $630 or so. It looks like you're around VF35 or so to me on that morgan, which is 15 away from being AU50 which is where they start to increase in value.

I love how you can tell that mine is around a VF35 just from looking at the picture. How can I learn to do that? Is it just years of experience? I would love to learn how to grade coins.

Not necessarily "years," but certainly an effort on your part. This is a basic skill of coin collecting, without which you will not be a collector but a victim.

I like the looks of a well circulated coin with original surfaces, just like the one you just purchased. If the rest of your selections look like this one it must be an impressive set. VF35 looks like a competent grade for this coin and the price was great. nlp

Nip Coins. Thank you. Most of my coins are around the same shape. Some Older, some newer. Take a look at my rookie collection. It's a start. =)

I don't think I have an 86-0 yet in my collection do tho this very fact the small differences in grading can result in a large amounts of money to clime the grade ladder...this basically means that there are plenty of low end 86-0's out there but as you go up in grade they become scarce...34 bucks is much less that most pay on ebay at current melt prices YOU DONE GOOD!! lets see that Standing Libery Quarter you have it loos nice from far away!, one of my first coin loves, but Morgans won out in the end...

Aladinslamp. Thank you. I actually posted a picture of my liberty quarter in another post. Below is a link. By the way. My most prized possession is a 1916-D Mercury dime that I just found in my old junk coin box. It has been confirmed to be real, but it is damaged. =( Still worth a few hundred tho. =)
