I've been very picky with making my selections for my growing type set. I've kept my eye open for a Twenty Cent Piece for 3 years, and held out until today. I bought this from a dealer at a very reasonable price. The repunched S was unnoticed. I'm thinking that this is very close to AU quality. Not sure if it has been cleaned, or if the plastic has been rubbed as I haven't taken it out of the holder yet. What do yall think?

Humm... looking at it again, it seems both S's have split serifs on the bottom and top. Both photos show splitting.

What is that in the denticle below the 7?

The RPM is known, and I believe that may be the top of another 7 down there in the denticals. I think you can also see part of an 8 in the denticals under the left side of the 8. I suspect the lines are heavy hairlines on both side of the coins. Tap the edge of the holder so the coin shifts in the 2X2 and see if the lines stay in the same place on the coins. If they do then they are hairlines.

I think that this coin was brushed lightly to clean it a long tome ago.

Fortunately, it does not detract too much from it's appearance. That would not have stopped me from buying it, price being OK.

I am also looking out for a 20 cent, and one of the most common dates would be OK for me. I have been looking for one of these for more than three years now.

So far, I have decided against a couple I have seen, because the condition was not good enough. VF condition without problems would be OK for me.

The swirly lines do indeed look like hairlines from cleaning. Try Condor's suggestion to confirm whether the lines are in fact on the coin. If so, then you need to decide whether a hairlined example in AU-ish grade is acceptable. If you seek a problem-free coin I'd keep looking. The 1875-S is readily available in all grades and the re-punched mint mark variety does not carry a large premium.

In my own experience I've always had regrets about "settling" for a problem coin. If a problem piece is a bullion-related issue or a really low price that's another story....

If you love it, keep it!

I took it out and the semicircular hairlines going east to west were on the plastic, not the coin. There are some hairlines on the coin from what looks like cleaning, and some bag marks. Looks great in hand and I'm happy.

Nice RPM! It sure looks like one or more MPDs in the denticles.
I have a few MPDs from this period--it's thought they were made to test die hardness.
