Unlike my last post, where it appears the coin may be a poor attempt at a fake, I am 'reasonably' sure this one is NOT

I understand that many of these coins are over-graded, but this one is a SOLID AU58 and may in fact be very conservatively graded. Can you help me with the value?

My research is not turning out well: Pertaining to a standard valuation with this grade of coin.

Thanks again for all of your insight!

I think the $1500 that you paid for it was a fair price. This is a very nice example - pretty coin.

As I've done a hundred times in the past (and will a hundred times in the future ), I'd suggest you register with Heritage Auctions (ha.com). It's free, and will give you access to their archive of over 1.3 million prior coin auctions going back to the 90's. It's a pretty good indicator of what knowledgeable collectors will pay for specific coins.

They have 500 results for 1937-D 3-Legs in AU50-58 alone. Perusal of those results will show that $1500 is a reasonable price for this coin.

Excellent! Thanks to all for the feedback. At least I didn't overpay for the coin. I'll check out the ha.com site, thanks for the tip!

OK, I think I want to sell this coin becuse I have my eye(s) on another item. I really don't want to post this coin on ebay because all people try to do is 'low-ball' you. It becomes a pain in the but* real quick! I even had someone offer me $600.... and they were serious!! Any advice on where I should/can list this coin and the bids will be serious, or at least in the same ballpark as the actual coin value? Thanks again!

This is a Heritage coin.

The amount you will get for selling it is proportional to the time you're willing to invest in liquidating it. People ain't buying $1500 coins off Craigslist, and ebay is precisely what you visualize it to be for a coin this important. At a bare minimum, not knowing precisely how it works, you're probably looking at close to a month to get the coin into one of Heritage's regular Tuesday and Sunday auctions. Teletrade is likely similar.

I am not in a rush. How about this: With a VERY strong feeling that this coin is conservatively graded, should I send it to say NGC for another evaluation. I am almost positive it will come back at a minimum of MS60? Thoughts anyone!

Does anyone think I should send this coin in to NGC or back to PCGS for a reevaluation before selling the coin? As I noted above, it appears to be very conservatively graded and may in-fact be a MS60/61/62..... Your thoughts?

Your best chance for an upgrade is to crack out the coin and send it in raw. However, you also take the chance it will come back AU-55 or even as a "Genuine" if they decide it now has some problem. It could happen!

PCGS would take your money to officially review the grade with the coin still in the slab but I suspect the chance they would upgrade an AU to MS is just about zero. The 3-Legger is especially risky since it was produced due to excessive die polishing which softens the details. If soft detail looks like wear to the grader they will be conservative and call it AU.

Bottom line: I'd talk to Heritage and see what minimum bid they would consider to be reasonable. If you do auction it there it will take months for you to receive the proceeds.

What about sending it to NGC? I would be afraid to remove the coin from the case... Why would it take months to get the proceeds from heritage. Bill

Again, the best shot at an upgrade would be to send it raw which creates the risk it will grade lower or be flagged as a problem coin. If you send it in the PCGS slab (called a "crossover" submission) they most likely would put it in their holder at the same grade. There is a very small chance they would upgrade it to MS.

The auction set-up process is slow and after the auction ends it takes a long time to collect all the bidder payments and finalize all their purchases. It took over 2 months for me to receive payment after consigning coins to Teletrade and they have auctions two or three times a week. I haven't consigned to Heritage but my understanding is that Teletrade is faster than Heritage as far as getting money to the consignors.

Does anyone have any personal reports on how fast they got their money from a Heritage auction?
