Hi everyone, I'm a new comer and just joined the community:)
Recently I have my eyes on the 2006 gold toonie(ring is 22Kt, core 4.1Kt), does anyone know its original price and how much it should worth now? thanks Edited by SilverBug 08/15/2011 5:35 pm

I'm not sure what it's original price from the Mint was, but you can buy it right now from J&M for $444.95

Original price was 399.95 CAD With a stronger US dollar back then, the cost was about $350.

Thanks, I saw it on J and m too. based on my calculation, I found the metal value of this coin should be above 500 at today's price unless my method is flawed, that's way I want to check its original price

we know the diameter of the coin is 28mm, weights 14.02g. the inner core diameter is 16mm(? measured by a caliper). so the ring area : core area = (14*14-8*8):8*8 = 132:64 I use another gold toonie as reference, 1996 gold toonie which has the reverse metal component and weights 11.4g so we have 132A + 64B = 14.02 64A + 132B = 11.4 A is the 22Kt part, B is the 4.1Kt Part it turned out that 132A(22Kt ring) weights around 11g and has almost 10g gold. am I wrong ?

Have to factor in that 22Kt and 4.1Kt have different densities. don't imagine J&M will sell anything below gold value though, if that's what you're getting at.

the densities of different material have already been weighted in. that's the main reason the second coin was used as reference. the whole calculation on assumed one thing, the average thickness of outer ring and inner coin are the same

not a big fan of J&M because of their slow updating of listings. too often have I made the order or called in only to be turned away because they are really out of stock, or put on the spot with whether to commit to a higher updated price.

some of their staff doesn't know coin or bullion at all. here is a real story, last time I visit J&M, a staff was selling a 5 gram silver bar to a guy, before the transection, he decided to weight it, then came back and said: "wait, this is a 5 ounce bar"

Did the clerk confuse grams and ounces or did the customer almost get away with paying for 5g and walking away with 5oz?
I never had the chance to visit the physical store, but just about had it with their internet ordering system. My first order from them took a good month to reach me, this counted from the day I paid via within-bank transfer to boot. Next order of commemorative silver coins took just as long because the sales clerk taking my order went on sick leave then quit. The coin eventually came but but arrived with only the capsule because, get this, the shipping clerk thought it was wise to save Me money by not sending the box and papers with the coin... another 3 weeks before I got the boxes and they Did Me a Favor not charging me shipping for the boxes.
J&M do have the cheapest prices I can find on most commemorative coins and most of the bullion, but I do avoid dealing with them as much as I can. Fortunately I am now familiar with one of the few competent sales there and can ask for him by name.

Just to clarify things a bit, I recently picked up the Charlton Volume Two, and the definitive total gold weight is listed as 0.333 ounces, or 10.35 grams. This puts the current gold melt weight (excluding silver) at $594 as of Nov.24.
