I have an 1881 canadian dime in unc. Condition...but it has a varience that I require some more information on. My parents bought the coin in the mid-sixties, and clearly seen on the coin are two tear drops struck onto the queens cheek. I was told that this was the year the the queens boyfriend had been killed in the war, and an unknown number were struck thusly before the coin was stopped, and the remaining run was without said variance. Through exhaustive research, I found that the mint which struck the coin burned to the ground in the early 1900's, and there are no records left....any info about this coin would be greatly appreciated. I have been told that it may be as rare as the 1911 canadian silver dollar.....

Welcome, tattoojohn, to the Forums.

Your coin sounds interesting but, we have to see a picture to give you any idea.

Coins can have any number of marks for any number of reasons. intentional and unintentional marks come from the mint all the time. Marks also get added to coins once they hit circulation, again some intentional and some unintentional.

We definitely need a picture. the more close up the better. And try a few different angles. I'm sure the gang here will want to dissect this coin pretty good.

In 1881 of which you are talking about the queen was of course Victoria who was born in 1837 til 1901, she married her first cousin Albert in 1840 until his death in 1861, at this time queen Victoria went into seclusion until her death in 1901 and was rarely seen in public.
To emagin she had a boyfriend is absurd and does not hold up under historical scrutiny, as does any war happening in 1881.
With a mintage of over 950 thousand I have trouble believing it would be as rare as the 1911 dollar...
