I keep looking at the hair detail comparison pictures, and the conclusion I keep coming down to is that the SEGS hair looks right and NGC hair does not. this is in comparing them both to images in the Breen Early Cent Encyclopedia.

Then I ought to check more references--if only to sharpen my observational skills.
Generally, when hair detail crosses an area where no other detail is present, it raises flags for me.
I think of it as the difference between "believable wear" and "unbelievable detail" On a finer point, I look at aesthetics, and whether they match the original.
Here are a couple more pics for 1795 showing how the hair blends to nothing, vs isolated, defined strands continuing to the forehead.
Certainly, the ebay coin isn't a better grade than these two.
