however the B in Liberty looks a little odd to me.

Nice observation algol.

I compared this coin with two others of similar grade and can report that the 'B' is the same on all three ... what I believe we are seeing on this one is a bit of surface staining in the base of the incuse 'B' that is making it standout in the photo.

I will post the 'answer' later today (Sunday).

Any other opinions?

David

Thanks Nickelsearcher I did learn a few things by watching this post. I really love the Liberty V nickels and my favorite coin the Buffalo nickel.

That's the attitude that will serve you well as you grow in the hobby djhughes.

This great forum is a wonderful place to share, ask, learn and ... eventually teach. I am stuck in the share, ask and learn portion of that growth curve.

I also humbly suggest that self-education through reference books can also be valuable.

For me ... I have found the Red Book series on Nickels to be very helpful ... authored by the numismatic giant David Bowers ... there are two books covering the entire span of nickel 5 cents pieces ... Shield, Liberty, Buffalo and Jefferson.

I commend these to you as you continue to learn and grow.

That is a beautiful coin! My first thought was 53 from the obverse, but then thought 55 as I looked at it more. The reverse looked more like a 58 with full cartwheel, so just a tad obverse grade limited imo. Way to go!

I had guessed XF/AU, but with the higher luster, I can see AU-55.
