I agree with F15. Looks like it's been harshly cleaned or something else done to it.

F15 dipped, retoned. Seems like at least 70% of early IHC's had some kind of cleaning sometime in their lives. Pretty nice coin for the date (any coin better than mine gets the pretty nice designation)

I would say F-12 or 15. I agree that it does look like it has been cleaned.

The pictures turned out really grainy. I don't know why because it doesn't look like that in hand. The color looks original, though I do think the surfaces were messed with at some time. No hairlines, but the coin looks a bit shiny in reflective light, like it was thumbed or lightly polished with a hankerchief.

A lot of IHCs from 1870 have an odd color and mushy details. A low survival rate due to melting/recoinage didn't help either. There were a some big obv die breaks, and they were having trouble making good dies. There are also many obv dies with MPDs in the denticles, presumably to check die hardness. Your pics look like an issue with compression--the jpeg "artifacts" are as big as details on the coin.

I admit to being a tough grader. I just don't see all of LIBERTY. VG

DV--- There is a strange lump protruding from Liberty's neck. I circled it in this picture. What might that be from?

Johnny, I know of a few clash, file, or MPDs in the neck area, but I don't have a listing for 1870. If it doesn't look like corrosion, it might have been on the die. For a small fee, Rick Snow will look at IHCs and make his call.

That lump in neck is interesting! It is not currently listed as a SNOW variety, but it is eerily reminiscent of the 1873 open 3 Snow 7, with an MPD in the same spot on the neck. I would definitely send it to Rick Snow (I think he still charges $4 plus shipping?) - it would be attributed to you.

I think it's a solid F12.
