I broke open an Uncirc set to fill my Dansco and found this Dime. The lines around the mouth, for some reason just don't look right to me.

looks like either a) a cracked dye or b) someone took a chisel to it.

either way it doesn't add any value to the coin especially if it's just been tooled on. neat find tho, errors are always nice!

Lol, thanks wasn't looking for any extra value. AS for tooling. Well, I did mention that I took it right out of the Cellophane from a sealed Mint Uncirculated set for 1969. So what ever it is. it is impossible for it to be PMD.

CLoser images might help. If indented into the coin it could be struck through thread or a rub from another coin before it went into the packaging. Anything is possible after the coin is struck. In the mint packaging they can still be damaged and be PMD.

A more focus picture on the area concerned would help a lot in identifying whether this crack one is PMD or a struck through case.

Notice that it follows the lines of the cheek. There are a lot of die scratches on this one. I can't get a better resolution with my camera. The area in front of it, i.e. the mouth is on a lower plane than the line and the check.

I may be splitting hairs here. But isn't the term Post Mint Damage, rather than Post Minting Damage? If the latter I stand corrected, but if the former then the term would seem to indicate damage after it has left the Mint. I know Mint can be used as a verb. It would be improper English, it seems to me, to use it thus in that term. But Hey What do I know? I'm just an Engineer, and English was not my strongest subject!

Post mint damage is after the coin was struck, it was damaged. It could happen dropping from the machine into the cointainer, during the wrapping, during circulation or intentional. It covers them all if the coin doesn't look like it did when the coin was struck.
Rest in Peace
