Very Late Die State dies made your coin. They get that way when they are used too long after so many cleanings.

Coop is right. It is called ghosting and is usually seen on large thinner coins. It is very common on mid twentieth century English and Australian large pennies. It is rather unusual to see it on US cents but it does happen.
