Hi guys, I have a meet set-up tomorrow with a gentleman regarding some coins. Quote:The indian heads are $1.50 each, loose Liberty nickels are $1 each, steel pennies are 25 cents each, large cents are $15-20 each and 2 cent pieces are $15 each. I have some liberty albums in the $125-200 range. I also have some silver quarter albums. Here's my stance... I can do a $1.50 on the Indian Heads with a clear date and pre-1887 good quality. But, very weary going in at $15 each on the 2 Cent pieces, I'm a new collector and from what I've read they're not incredibly valuable unless specific dates and very good condition. Same for the Large cents. So if you guys could offer me up some words of advice, what should I expect to see for those prices?

I don't really think those prices are unreasonable, especially if it's a coin dealer, who has to make a living doing this.

It all depends on condition. $15-20 for large cents is a great deal if they're at least VF. Pass if they're G or less, unless they're early (pre 1816). For the V nickels, if you can get them at least in VG, the price is right, even for the common dates. IHPs, also target VG at that price.

If I was buying these in a larger quantity, I'd expect a volume discount.

I feel that the prices are very reasonable for the coin types. Usually large cents run between 30 - 50 dollars each and the 2 cent types are a little more than the large cents. I hope your meeting is a productive one and good luck.

Those do seem like reasonable prices. It could be a steal or it could be a bad deal, since you do not know the condition of the coins. I saw a deal on craigslist that looked too go to be true for some large cents. they ended up all being such horrible shape. Just bring a price guide and try to grade the coins as best you can.

Expect the large cents to be well worn and have some damage for that price. Check the large cents on ebay to get a good feel of what is actually a deal.

Okay thanks for the advice. I ended up not meeting, he wanted me to come to him and he lived an hour and a half away, even though my ad was only for my area. im meeting an older (66) collector today, says he has an uncirculated Two Cent Piece and he's asking $65 (1864). Plus has tons of uncirculated Morgans and thousands of other coins he's looking to unload, hasn't sold his coins to anyone yet, only his Gold so I might hit the motherload. He did mention he doesn't follow prices, as long as he gets 'his' price.

Way to much depends on the condition of a coin for value. By Indian Heads I presume he means Indian Head Pennies, not Nickels (Buffalo ones). Thinks of this. An Indian Head cent dated 1877 starts at over $800 but a 1907, all beat up and worn, is worth about $0.50. Long before you buy something in coins, at least do the same thing you would do when buying a car. Check it out. The Large Cents could be all pitted and worn smooth. I've seen Steel Cents at flea markets for $0.10 each but all full of Rust. Hope fully you realize you just have to see them first.

I never said I would go there and hand him money blindly. Simply asked what should I expect if he's asking that much. He didn't have pictures, either way he lives too far away but I appreciate your guys advice. Anything is helpful to a newbie
