I debated where to put this since I am asking, for overall info.

I know almost nothing about coinage from the medieval period. My one son loves knights, etc. I do not want to spend a lot of money b/c he is still at the age where he loses things!

Could someone who knows suggest a coin (if there is such a thing) that would be fairly inexpensive that I could hand to him and say it may have been used by knights/people of this time period? ebay auction numbers would be a help - if you have the time

Early english cross pennies. Make a timeline list of the kings and go from there. These coins are not that expensive.

Hammered pennies was the way I was thinking also.

Also, the derniers and denars of Europe are also available at reasonable cost.

I've always thought that an excellent "knights themed" coin is the silver denier (penny) from the Crusader principality of Antioch. Not only were they issued by one of the crusader states (and therefore absolutely, definitely issued by and used by knights), but depict the prince in full knightly gear, wearing a helmet and chain-mail armour.

If this pic looks familiar to some folks, that's because it's one of the ones I sent to Susan to be used on CCF as generic avatars - it's the one labelled "CrusaderKnight".

They're not that expensive, either. I paid $35 for that one back in 2001.

For ebay links, the only ones I could find for sale right now are some BINnig for $100 or so, like this one. There were two sold recently by a seller in Belgium, this one and this one, that both went pretty cheaply.

When doing an ebay search, look for "Antioch principality" or "Antioch crusader". Just searching for "Antioch" will return bucketfuls of Roman and Byzantine coins, which is not what you want.

Thanks for the help. I really am ignorant on this - how would I search for the Hammered pennies - just "Hammered English Pennies," or "English Cross Cents?" I also, defnitely, will be looking into the antioch crusador coins.

Definitely don't use "cent" in your searching for hammered coins - the words "cent" and "penny" only mean the same thing in North America. These coins are pennies, not cents.

If searching for "English hammered", you could try that phrase, but many of the hits will be for coins that are probably later in time than your target period, which for English coins is really 1066-1500. You might have better luck searching for the specific names. "Richard the Lionheart" is a famous crusader king of England. "short cross penny" and "long cross penny" are both names of types of pennies that were limited to this time period, too; searching for "cross penny" should let you find both types at once. Coins of Henry II and III and Edward I, II and III tend to be cheapest.

try out vcoins on the internet. try out your local coin shows. These are not to find. Doing a timeline of countries, kings, popes, etc, really helps to get a picture.
