I bought this today as a placeholder in my type set album. It's in nice shape aside from the 1/2 stamp right smack in the middle of Ms. Liberty's face. How much do counter stamps hurt the value of a coin? I paid $23 for this one. I'm no grading expert but I'm thinking this one would grade in the VF range if not for the stamp.

That is a beautiful counter stamp. I have a small collection of them myself, mostly on large cents.

That is an interesting counterstamp, 1/2 on a Half Cent coin I would grade it as VF+ details and $23 was a reasonable price IMO.

Having collected counterstamps for many years now, I'd call that a reasonable price. This one was likely used as a check for wood, coal or some other commodity.

A very nice example, and the price looks good to me.
Do you have the counterstamp book by Brunk?

I have the Brunk books on American counterstamps. It's a fine reference book, as is Rulau's, yet there's ever so much more that has yet to be written on this subject.

Awesome coin and counter stamp. And darn god price on it. More than a place holder IMO.
