I have a 1859 stuck on a thinner than normal planchet. I would say it is at best 60% the thickness of a normal planchet.
Anyone ever heard of this ?

The 59's were struck on thinner planchets than other large cents. There were lots of complaints on the weight of the coin so the mint upped the weight from 1876 forward to match the British 1/2d. Now if you are talking 50 or 60% thinner than other 59's that's something else. You can thin a coin, post mint, by placing it in an acid. The coin etches equally so there is not a loss of detail, just a general thinning.

Thanks ,Dan you are right the planchets are sometimes thinner, great, now there will be another dozen varieties of 59s or has someone already noted them.
I took a quick look at 5 that I had handy,I will have to get around to diging out the others I have to check them. But I am 2 of 5 with thin planchets.
