Hello, this is my first time posting here, but I have been lurking for a while. I've really learned alot about different varieties and coins in general and also enjoy seeing pics of peoples coins. I don't have much of a collection, mostly a circulation canadian coins collection given to me by my grandfather about 20 years ago. Lets just say I'm continuing it, filling slots as the years go by. I have found a few oddities, including this 2001 toonie. I noticed it was different as soon as I got a hold of it in some change. It is .2g heavier, I'd say about 20% thicker and alot shinnier (although it is pretty worn) than a normal one. Anyone know what is wrong with my over weight toonie?
Thanks

Is the outer ring magnetic?

Any pros have an idea about this one? Did some research online but couldn't find anything on 2001's.

Could this be a counterfeit like the Toronto subway tokens....not designed to take in a collector but just to make $2? I heard that this was attempted....

^^If this is the case (which I doubt), someone sure went through a lot of trouble to make some $$$. You can't really see it in the pics, but it has much more shine than the regular one.

They did counterfeit a couple of million Toronto subway tokens..... I heard at the time, maybe 10 years ago as I recall, that the same ring was working on toonies. Just mentioning as a possibility. Date is about right.

Is it an impaired proof? I guess that would only explain the shininess, not the thickness or being over-weight.

I am remote access and can't post web links. But if you search on London free press July 29, 2008 there is a story about shiny, thick counterfeit toonies jamming vending machines. A CBC story on oct 6, 2006 refers to the break up of the counterfeiting ring. Try searching on counterfeit toonies.

Did a bit of research and could only find info on counterfeits of newer coins bearing the new queen effigy, nothing on 2001s. The mystery continues I guess...

An impaired proof is a proof coin that's been damaged (typically because somebody spent it).

Does anyone here collect counterfeit coins that they have found. It seems like that would be an interesting thing to collect. I assume that they would have no value just collector appeal. Anyone?

Prana,

There must be a few people out there who collect them. Several months ago, I saw a 1946c 5 cent coin from Newfoundland on ebay. It was labelled as counterfiet, but still sold for $25.00 or so. One of the best counterfiets I've ever seen. I hope the buyer wasn't planning to market it as the real thing....
