I wasn't going to post this one because it was from a different seller and looks better, but now I'm all paranoid and sick to my stomach about the other group.

The scratches and whatnot on this one look like ordinary circulation wear to me, and they mostly stand out because of the dark toning (the color does not bother me.) They aren't all going the same direction, that's mostly just the lighting.

The obverse has some recent scratches from mishandling, knowing that the coin is enlarged to about 5X.
The reverse looks normal circulation wear.

The toning tends to hid defects, I have looked at a few 23-S myself lately to stock up and couldn't find any that I would accept.

It's a hard date for sure. The scratches are not noticeable except under strong light and under magnification, so it actually looks good in hand (and I like the circulated cameo effect). What would you grade it?

Those cleaned ones put me in such a sick mood, I wanted to quit collecting. I had to go huddle up next to my pretty slabbed ones to cheer up.

I just have to remember that it's not a race and really get more picky about the coins I choose and who I buy them from. I've passed over a lot of 1921 and 1921-D (even certified) because they quite have the look I wanted. There's no reason not to be even pickier with these medium-tough dates.

Looks VF-30 or so to me and the scratches seem very minor. Dark color like this can be associated with slight corrosion so I would look carefully for any pitting or granular surface spots. If there aren't any such defects then she's A-OK!

It looks to be also VF 35 to XF 40 and the over all look is similar to my 21-d.

OK, I'm gonna keep this one after all. I think I only had a bad feeling about it because of the others. It looks good next to my other Mercs and is the right grade at a decent price.

@muddler: Is this your '21-D? I was asleep at the switch on that one, I wanted it!

Here's the 21-d, it's darker than the photo represents.
