I do not know very much about the design of the Moon Landers, but as I understand it, there were four parts:

Command Module (returned to the Earth's surface),
Service Module (discarded just before re entry),
Lunar Excursion Module (left in orbit around the Moon),
Descent Stage. (left on the Moon's surface)

Only the Command Module returned to the Earth's surface.

So how come the metal for this piece is from the 'landing module'?

I stand to be corrected if I am wrong.

I don't know how it could contain any of "The Eagle" lunar module, but the company did get sued over using the image of Buzz Aldrin on the medal. I'm still searching for more details.

Astronaut Aldrin files lawsuit over medal

November 29, 1999 - Claiming fraud and a breach of contract, Apollo 11 moonwalker Buzz Aldrin has filed a lawsuit against the three manufacturers of a medal that commemorates the anniversary of his flight.

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, accuses Excelsior Productions, United Precious Materials and World Network of unfair business practices, fraud, breach of contract and invasion of Aldrin's rights of privacy and publicity.

The case revolves around the alleged unauthorized use of a photo of Aldrin that depicts him standing on the Moon's surface, his left arm bent across his chest and crewmate Neil Armstrong mirrored in his gold-plated helmet visor. In the suit, Aldrin states he has licensed the same image for previous commercial products, including commemorative medallions and legal tender coins.

NASA classifies most of the imagery from its missions as public domain and therefore available for use without the need for licensing. However, in its guidelines for the reproduction of photographs, the agency states that if it "includes an identifiable person, using the image for commercial purposes may infringe that person's right of privacy or publicity." In such cases, the policy instructs that "permission should be obtained from the person" who is pictured.

Although a visor blocks the view of his face, a name tag on the front of the spacesuit identifies the astronaut in the aforementioned photo as "E. Aldrin".

In papers submitted to the court, Aldrin claims that an agreement existed with Excelsior and World Network for him to endorse a line of commemorative medallions and plaques relating to the 30th anniversary of the flight of Apollo 11. However, Aldrin contends he withdrew from the arrangement after a required upfront payment of $10,000 was never made.

Despite Aldrin's withdrawl, Excelsior supplied medallions to United Precious Materials, which also operates as the American Historic Society.

"Due to Dr. Aldrin's unique background and special skills, his name, likeness, image and identity have become valuable assets, symbolizing Dr. Aldrin and his good will," the lawsuit states. "Dr. Aldrin's interest in his good will represents a valuable commercial asset, an asset that he alone has the right to license and exploit."

Neither Aldrin nor the companies identified in the lawsuit could be reached for comment.

Update: I found one that sold at auction in Nov. 2010 for $20.50 with free shipping.

You can buy them here for $39.99 http://www.trueamericancollectibles...Id=the005-20

Not to take away your post in any way but I have one too. I just recently purchased one for 1.50. I looked up many different Apollo 11 coins and most of them were for sale around 10 dollars. Now I'm not sure if its even worth 10 dollars or not because I cant find any transactions of sales for them coins. I did find one for sale on ebay for 995 dollars . Thats ebay for you . Heres the one I got its the size of a dollar.

A very interesting point which also came to my mind as I read this listing. For fun, I googled "where are the apollo command modules" and came up with a list that has the following:

Quote:

Apollo 11
Command Module "Columbia"
The National Air and Space Museum, Washington, D.C.

Lunar Module "Eagle"
Jettisoned from the Command Module on 21 July 1969 at 23:41 UT (7:41 PM EDT)
Impact site unknown

I also find it interesting the makers of the medal call the Eagle the "landing module" instead of "lunar module." Was this a typo? Were they unaware of the proper term? Did they find/melt the Eagle and the government did not discover/reclaim it until it was too late b/c the coins were already made?

Although I like the looks of this medal, I admit I am a bit skeptical for now. Although I would not hesitate to say I definitely trust the accuracy/veracity of their claims about as much as I trust claims coming from D.C. nowadays.

It reminds me of the Three Stooges episode where they are making chicken soup. They have a boiling pot of water, dunk a plucked chicken in the pot 3 times, and then put the chicken back in the ice box!

I really would like to know the story behind these medals - does it say who made them anywhere on the package or other included paperwork (if any)?

There were no other papers that came with it. My father bought it for me way back in the day, I can't remember if it was from a museum or not.

This also is a cool coin. Also great to see enough specification to know what parts they used to make them and a specific note of the metal having been flown. It might be the first coin posted in this topic could be a similar situation. Thanks for posting!

Strange thing! I bought the same Apollo 11 coin in the original post at a silver and gold buyer's shop today. I saw it last Friday, but the only person working the counter didn't know how much the owner wanted for the coin. I went back today and asked about it. He looked it up on ebay and found 2 for $29.99. One was selling for $29.99 and the other had no bids.

I thought he would use the ebay price for his price, but he said "How does $10.00 sound?" Amy and I are buying coins with our birth years for each other, so now she has S/N A03266. I'm still not sure how it has metal from "The Eagle" moon lander.

If anyone finds out how the lawsuit turned out or just how much of "The Eagle" is in the coin, please let me know.

Yea, but the value is mainly determined by the involved bidders. It's hard to grade/value.
