I got my cheap scale at Harbor Freight. I don't remember what I paid, but it wasn't much.

EDIT - just looked on their site, showing on sale for $11.99

sorry, I had to step away. Spent the weekend dog sitting, and had to see her off when her "parents"/owners came for her.

my advice:
get one with common-sized batteries, such as AA or AAA. The other sizes are expensive, and in my experience, they go flat quickly, whether you use the scale or not.

you'll need at least 50 grams capacacity, but a few coins go a little larger, so my next scale will go to 100g.

and, you'll need a scale with increments of 0.01 gram.

I have one of the HF models, think it was around $13. Has six scales, and a wider range than the one I paid $1300 for in 1980. I'd say get one that weighs grams, dwt, and maybe grains and weighs up to 7000 grains/20 ounces, and you've got 99% of stuff covered.

Those "hearing aid" batteries are $5 each at battery specialists, and 8/$1 at Dollar Tree.

Bought a DigiWeigh off of ebay and am quite happy with it. Backlight screen, tare, gr/oz conversion and calibration weight for about $12 if I remember. The lid can be used as a tray for small items. Great for weighing coins.

You can also get pretty cheap digital scales at any smoke shop/cigarette store. Well in California anyways.

WOW, such places still exist? Not around me. Gone with the wind.
The ones from Harbor Frieght are fantastic for the price.

Just ordered the 1000 Gram Digital Scale from Harbor Freight Tools. Did a quick Google search and found a 20% off coupon (DISC20) that knocked a couple of bucks of the already discounted price of $11.99.

I got an American Weigh one from Amazon couple weeks back for under/around $10. It has 6 measurements, 100 g and .01 accuracy. Very happy with it. Even came with 2 AAA batteries.

Seems to be similar or a clone of the Digiweigh ones.

I'd recommend spending the extra 2 dollars to get the portable pocket scale from Harbor Freight. I've got one and am very happy with it. That way if you ever decide to go someplace where you might be getting coins (coin show, estate sale, etc.) you can easily take it with you. May not do that often, but if the opportunity arises it is nice to have a scale that can easily go with you.

By the way, if you go to an actual HF store you will probably have to ask them for the scale. They usually keep it behind the counter. Apparently it is popular with druggies and therefore gets shoplifted a lot!
