I've got the Dansco albums with proofs for all current denominations of
US coins, but what I don't have are very many of the 90% silver proof issues from 1992 onwards. All I have of these at this time are the 1992 and 1993 dimes and the 1992 quarter. I've almost got a full collection of the clad proofs from 1968-current, but the thought of purchasing all those silver coins just leaves me cold. Nothing against them, really, but I personally am quite content with having the clad proofs for those years, and I'd rather spend the money it would take to purchase those silver issues on some older stuff that I'm looking forward to working on.
This being the case, I'm considering purchasing some blank pages for the appropriate denominations, labeling them myself, and essentially creating custom albums that have a single S-mint slot for the dimes, quarters, and halves from 1992 onward. It would allow me to have the coins that I personally am interested in collecting, without having to make a choice between buying coins I'm not interested in or having a bunch of empty holes in my albums.
I'd also probably do something similar for other coins that I'm not interested in acquiring, such as the 1922 plain and 1970-S small date cents and the 1979-S and 1981-S "type 2"
SBA dollars.
I've seen it said many times on these forums that one should collect the coins they want to collect, not what someone else (such as an album manufacturer) says they should. Seems to me that my proposed course of action is a logical outgrowth of that, given my personal collecting interests. And besides, if I ever change my mind I've still got the original album pages that I can always go back to. But I'd really be interested in getting the thoughts of others on this, just to see how crazy y'all think I am.
