I just received a few coins back from ngc. I was happy they both came in MS and a bit shocked at the grades as they gave the weak worn strike of the 1863 an MS-62 and the much fuller strike of the 1864 a MS-61. The only reason I can see is luster.

Any way both coins have Retained Cud's. The 1863 the lower rev is broken side to side, as well as having about 90% of the obverse rim Cud.

The 1864 has an upper reverse Retained Cud that is not as big but pronounced well.

Is this something Rick Snow ID's like the Vams?

Thanks for your help

Rick Snow's attribution focuses on the date area--RPDs, MPDs, and DDO's/DDRs. Not so much on breaks and Retained Cuds.
Other than the break, I don't see anything on your 1864. I'd need a closer shot of the date area on the 1863 to check my book.

I'm surprised the 1864 got an MS rating, the feathers show weakness on the obverse. Is this due to am weak strike then, instead of light wear? I would have given the 1864 an AU55-58 rating.

Wear should be evident on the brow and cheek before the feather tips--an area that often is weakly struck or plugged with grease.

Both are a late die state and the die's where very much worn out. The breaks and cudding around the outer rims shows that. This is a case of the die was no longer anywhere close to sharp! I do not see them as a weak strike I see them as the die had no detail left

here's a link to my indian die cracks. Seems like I have a couple 1887's with these cracks, although none as nice as yours.
