Hi everyone, I've been looking at this forum for months now, but I never had a reason to post until now. I bought a 1916d Mercury dime on saturday and I'm trying to figure a few things out. First is if its real, which I'm guessing it is because it looks right and its from a dealer that I know. Second, what grade would it be and if I got a good deal on it($450). I'll try to post these pics, I just dont know if it'll work because I've never posted pics and have no idea what I'm doing. thanks

Looks good. If your happy it was a good deal.

Looks G-4. Price sounds good.

First, nice Merc. It appears to be an AG-3+ but I have seen examples with similar rim wear get slabbed as G-4. I would say $450 is a solid price if the dealer guarantees authenticity.

Second, terrible user name

Thats another borderline AG, G4. I see nothing offhand that says it isn't genuine. Not a bad pick up.

A good price. Solid AG-3.
I would take a chance and send it into ANACS for grading, with a little luck and you may get it back as G-4.

Good deal for a AG-3 which this looks to be at the high end of that grade. Nice pick up!

I'm with the AG-3 assessment, and I, too, would not mind owning that one!

This looks to be a very good buy in today's market. Buying from a credible source as you did was a wise move.

One means of determining authenticity of 16-D's that this oldtimer has used with success over the years is to look closely at the center of the D. It should appear as an equilateral triangle, akin an arrowhead. Compare that mintmark with those on the later dates.

As a kid, back in the 1960's, I recall seeing a vial of fifty mintmarks that a dealer was selling. I don't recall the price. The good news about him was that his shop got closed when he was busted for bookmaking. The shop was a front!

Another adviseable way to check for fraudulent coins is to look at the coin's edge. An honest dealer that I knew once bought a set of Buffalo nickels. The 1913-S variety II was actually two nickels that'd been planed down and welded together. The dealer hadn't bothered to remove the keys and check the edges. While I've yet to see that happen with a 1916-D, my guess is that there are some out there.

Appears authentic and I would also call an AG3+. Could have been in an old album evident of the uneven toning.
Congrats!

Thanks everyone! The dealer I bought it from said if I had any concerns, I could take it back and get a full refund. I really wasnt planning on buying a 16d anytime soon, but I couldnt say no to that price. I'm just wondering if I should send it in, because I really want to put it in my album. It seems like kind of a waste to get it graded now, then crack it open, then have to send it back in if I want to sell the album (way in the future). I can always send it in later, it's not like the grade is going to get worse in the next 20 years. Thanks again everyone for helping my authenticate it, I really love this forum!

Now I have two reasons to be jealous. I've been wanting a 16d for 25 years and you still have a 6 game lead on us.
Yes biokemist6 and I are cardinal fans.

Yeah, the only thing thats wierd is the toning on the back. I dont know how good it shows up on the picture, but if I hold it up to the light there is a reddish-brown coloration. I thought if it was in a bad album, it would get green on it or something....p.s, its about time the Crew had a division win, its only been almost 30 years!

It was 1982. They went all the way to the world series, but I can't remember who they lost to.........
