I'm back with another question about Indian Heads. In some of the descriptions, they mention diamonds. What is this and where do I look? Thanks.

They are the design on the ribbon running down from the Indian Headdress on the obverse

Yes, see above. There should be 4 diamonds on the ribbon end of the indian's (miss liberty) headdress. If the coin has no wear it's an MS. generally if the ribbon end is clearly separated from the hair locks, it's at least an XF....so the addition of the diamonds usually is determined to separate XFs from various AU grades.

First,

From http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_are_...head_pennies

Quote:
Actually, there are 4 diamonds that are part of the head dress ribbon. If you look closely at the ribbon running down the side behind the ear, you will see them imbedded in the ribbon. These are usually the first part of the design to wear off a circulated Indian cent, hence the description accompanying many of them that are for sale. The terms 4 diamonds, 3 diamonds, etc. refer to the quality of the coin.

Thanks, Okiepb, for the welcome. And a little more detail. I'm going to go look at my Indian Heads to see if any of them have any diamonds.

Numismatics is an ongoing learning process for all

Sometimes, you will see a diamond or two on higher VF and XF coins.

One of the many reasons people should ask questions. So many things get explained from questions and so many just don't ask.
