I was looking on the bay to find a nice Liberty Nickle for my type set and found this one; Does PCGS give + grades like others may give stars? Edited by oih82w8 09/12/2011 12:07 am

This plus is a new service designed to designate coins as high end for the grade.

Hmph, just goes to show ya..."those who don't know should ask questions". Thank you! I thought maybe it was another of those "fake slab "things". I must be getting paranoid.

I think PCGS decided to do this in response to the CAC stickers and its a way to generate further income from those who crack out coins and have them reslabbed.

I found this on the PCGS website; It is a fact of life that high-end coins exist within each grade. Collectors and dealers alike will seek these coins out and pay more for them. The PCGS SecurePlus system is designed to help single out the more desirable high-end coins within a grade. Coins meriting the "+" designation could command a significant premium.http://www.pcgs.com/secureplus.htmlThis particular V-Nickle does not have the "shield" for SecurePlus. Perhaps an earlier variant? YOU GUYS ROCK!

Quote: This particular V-Nickle does not have the "shield" for SecurePlus. Perhaps an earlier variant? No it is actually a more recent submission. When the Plus program was introduced you could only get the plus grades on coins submitted under Secure Plus. More recently, about six months ago, they extended the plus grades to the regular tier submissions as well. And the Plus grade is actually supposed to be a high end coin for the grade, not just an eye appeal thing like the NGC star. In house the PCGS grades actually have 101 grades of MS now, the eleven whole number grades and all the decimal point grades as well. If a coin grades MS-XX.6 or higher it gets the MS-XX+ grade. We all knew they couldn't grade consistently to one point on the MS scale. Now they want us to believe they can grade consistently to a tenth of a point.

soon it will be MS64+*!% + - High end for grade * - Excellent toning ! - Strong Strike % - Top % of grade in value If we need to distinguish between low, mid, and high end ranges with in a grade, why not a decimal number system. MS64.7 Its all just a marketing and sales game now. One more reason I'm not a fan of slabs. I wish it could go back to being, Slabs are for Authentication and preservation.

Given the inconsistency in grading MS coins among TPGs (the whole reason people resubmit) I think there should be less grades, not more. I'd rather see a 5 or 6 point scale for MS coins instead of the 11 point one we have today. I think the grades you get would be more consistent, but it will never happen since the TPGs make money off the current system.
The only use I really have for TPGs is for authentication of a high value coin or one that is commonly counterfeited.

The whole TPG thing is becoming absurd. Resubmissions, grading to order (?), no standard between TPGs, value variations, market grading, fake slabs, etc., etc.,etc., ad nauseam.

Yep, the TPG system has officially jumped the shark. We stopped selling them at our online store and just concentrate on accurately grading our raw coins so other people can decide if they want to participate in the TPG circus.

The more grades there are, the more accurate the grading becomes(in theory). Since most coins are different in regards to marks, luster etc, lumping them into a 6 point system would make more controversy than the "more grades" system, since 2 obviously different coins could make the same grade. just think back to when the grades jumped from EF to UNC. Immediately the question arose what about the coins in between, and AU was introduced. Then the question of how to numerically distinguish between regular UNC and GEM. It's not only a way for TGPs to make buckets of money, but its essential to determine coin values.

I generaly crack out all my slabbed coins I purchase as do most people I know. If you can't grade them yourself don't buy them in a slab unless the price is right as you'll generally pay an unnecessary premium.

The concept originally was at least somewhat acceptable. Put an unbiased 3rd-party's grade somewhere in between the naturally-biased seller's (1st-party's) grade and the naturally-biased buyer's (2nd-party's) grade. Why not? What it evolved into, however, through the aid of marketing and promotion, is the collection of status symbols.
