In the ASE topic, there are a lot of referrals to getting the sets graded prior to opening. Does this hold true for all items bought from the mint? I.E. If you buy any "set" of coins, you must keep them in original shipping paper to send in so they know that you did not mix and match coins? Along those same lines, are there any sets that you would NOT want to do this for? I am thinking the list would be smaller for the sets that you would want graded.......

The reason for having the ASE sets sent to the grading companies without opening the box, is so they can be graded as the 20th anniversary sets. If you bought the ASE anniversary set and opened it up then tried to send it to a grading company, they would only grade the Reverse Proof as a 20th anniversary. The other two they wouldn't, because they are sold individually. I don't think this rule applies to other coins.

spider is correct, the only way the TPG can know that the Uncirculated ASE with the W mint mark or the regular Proof came from the 20th anniversary set because they are sold separately so if the box is opened you could have bought the coins separately and bought a case and a Reverse Proof somewhere else and pieced together a 20th Anniversary set so they make you send them in sealed. With a proof set well you can't buy individual proof coins and they know a proof from a uncirculated coin just by looking at it, but these coins are identical they just are sold in the set and outside the set. I hope this helps and I didn't just confuse you more

Yes, this answered it in a way. I guess what I am curious of is things like the American Legacy set. This has proofs that are also sold separately. Would these be treated the same and the ASE's?

Thanks again.
