Looking at my Krause, I'm seeing that it has the highest mintage of the 3 years it was made. It wasn't the year, either, it was the middle year. Can anyone with a knowledge of Mexican coins bring me up to speed? It wasn't until 1992 that Nuevo Pesos came out, so prior knowledge wouldn't've been possible. Were they just not released? (What does that say about the $1 US president coin program?)

Good question! I think I heard the answer somewhere here or outside discussion. Now I got something to do this Saturday.

I actually asked this question of Krause and they sent me to their expert a gentlemen by the name of Don Bailey. he has a web site http://www.donbailey-mexico.com.

Essentially his answer was it has been that way for a long time and it was his assummption that many were destroyed and made them more rare. But his exact qyuote was:
"The 1987 $5 have always been scarcer then any of the other years. Causes for this could be several factors, and these are just guess as to what cis the cause. One could be that when they were struck there was enough in the system and they didn't need them to supply the banking system. They may have set in the mint and not get into the system. What happened to them is unknown, melted? setting on the floor in one of the many mint or Banco vaults

In the late 80s the Mexican roll collecting craze was over so few were saved by collectors.."

I live in Mexico and I have several 5 Pesos 1987... circulated of course! but they're not that scarce like Krause's expert says, I think is a big mistake to over value that year on that kind of coin.

The 1987 5P is not scarce in grades less than BU. KM has a habit of what I call legacy pricing, that is, they don't revise/revisit their numbers.

For modern Mexican coins, I am using Carlos Amaya's book, Illustrated Price Guide of the Modern Mexican Coins 1905 to Date, more and more.

The modern Mexican coin sleeper is the 1977 50 centavos. I pick up BUs whenever I can.
