I was at my local dealer today and was browsing a tray of U.S. quarters for $10 each. That's pretty steep, but the tray has some nice stuff, such as decent-looking SLQ (no visible dates pre-1925 unfortunately) and
Barber quarters.
There was an 1896 in there. It was pretty worn down. Only the top half of the date was visible, but it was certainly an 1896. I flip it over and the mintmark area is worn too, but there seems to be a blob there. I'm not sure, though.
The nearest US mint to where I live is San Francisco; that doesn't mean much on its own, but I do see a lot of S-mints here.
I passed up the coin, thinking that the mintmark area will need better magnification than my pocket loupe. I really don't feel like paying $10 for a coin worth melt. What do you do in cases like this?
By the way, I don't even collect
Barber quarters!
Thanks in advance for any advice you have.
