So I recently was going through some of the coins from the collection I inhereted from my great grandfather. I came across two 1939 royal visit medals but didnt think anything of it. Today I had a closer look and discovered that they actually have diff portraits on the back..so did they mint two diff versions?! here are pics.. NOTE: there are minor details in each portrait that are different, so I believe these are two different dies..but if someone could enlighten me :) Edited by Imohtep 09/22/2011 11:39 am

Well the obvious difference is that the busts are either touching or away from the rim. This is a first - I didn't realize there were two kinds. Doesn't surprise me though. They gave one away to all of the school children in 1939 - my Dad gave me the one he got when he was 15. How many did they make of these anyway?

I found out they made 3 diff sizes... Quote:To commemorate the visit, the Royal Canadian Mint struck three series of commemorative medallions: 77 mm presentation medals in gold, silver and tombac, 38 mm bronze and silver medallions for sale to the public (see above), and a 25 mm bronze medallion which was distributed to Canadian school children. The Obverse featuring the conjoined profiles of George VI and Elizabeth was designed by Percy Metcalf and was also used on the 1937 British Coronation Medal. The reverse, designed by Emanuel Hahn, shows a map of Canada and the route followed by the royal couple during their visit. However it does not state different dies used for the portraits

That's really observant Imohtep. I'm going to be looking at any I have now. I would love to hear if these diffences are documented.

That's pretty interesting! It's not just the truncation that's different, but details in the portraits too. Compare the eye on George VI or the profile on the queen. I would guess the medal w/truncation is a revision?

I have the silver version as well, it's available on ebay from time to time. But these medals are both the same size aren't they? Probably figured they needed more as the original batch all got sent out and this was the second rendition.

I just checked the three I have and they are all the 'full bust' variety (the one on the right).

The fleur-de-lis in the crowns are completely different as well.

Very interesting indeed.
The silver medal I have is of the second type (eyes semi closed) and the bronze medal I have is of the first type (eyes wide open).
Good observation Imohtep!

Curious => I haven't gone upstairs and checked mine yet, but is there any monetary difference between the types? ... my Granny left me a silver version (Silver dollar sized), but I remember looking up the value of the coin and being a bit disappointed by my findings ... "however", I didn't realize that there were different busts/versions of the coin ...
... hmmm? => I love this type of "stuff" when all of sudden your heart-rate increases, because you're "sure" that you have the lucky Golden-Ticket! (ahhhh, coin collecting rocks!)
