I found a 2003P nickel which appears to have been created using both a penny and a nickel blank. You can see that the two have been pressed together to form the nickel.
Is this unusual?

Are you sure it's not just missing the nickel plating on one side? A photo or scan would be great, post in the Canadian variety section if you post it

It is definitely two pieces of different metal pressed together, I am very familiar with metals. You can see the seams between the two metals on the rim. I will post a pic Monday when I get access to a scanner.

Based on your description of two different metal halves visible seam, it sounds like you have a magic trick coin. We will be waiting for scans

I believe I have described it badly. It appears that there was both a penny and a nickel planchet in the press at the same time. They have been pressed together to create the penny planchet on the Queen side and the nickel planchet on the beaver side. I most likely cannot scan the seam where the join. There was a lot of pressure to create the coin so it is not consistent and some of the materials have bled through on both sides.

Once I figure out how to upload pics:
As promised, I am attaching pics of my weird nickel. Any additional feedback is appreciated. I played with the contrast and colour levels a bit to show contrast better. I am not sure the edge pic will be very good, had to use my iphone.

Does that make it worth anything or just another nickel?
Judging by what I see, it appears to be two planchets squished together. I cannot get a good pic of the edge yet. I will keep trying.
Thanks,
Terry

Its a plating error. Here is my 2001 MS 60 plating error. This one looks like it is pure copper.

Thanks Daryl. Are either yours or mine worth anything special? I collect hi-grade coins, not error coins.
Thanks,
Terry

I love collecting error coins. Especially high grade ones. My coin is worth about $60 - $75 Your coin is scanned so I cant make a call on it! Wish I could help you out a little more.
