I know that it is Japanese, not Chinese. I -think- it is the variety minted between 1769-1860.

Maybe one of the experts can confirm or correct.

Yep, Japan, denomination 4 mon.

I would say $5 is a fair price - but the market for Japanese coins is hot and my price may be out of date. These coins were crude casts and they were produced for over 100 years. Total production was substantial. Grading cast coins with lowered fields is also NOT my specialty.

Cool coin. Swamperbob is right. The Japanese market is really hot now. Check out the link below to view a nice one from our recent auction. The history of Japanese money is really interesting. If you have some time on your hands, you should look into it.

Are you supposed to tout dubious off site auctions with only minimal coin community involvement?

$5 is a nice return on 15 cents, but what made the coin in the link a $3700+ coin?

I am not certain about what goes into grading cast coins - but a quick comparison of the two photos shows a couple significant differences.

First, the Heritage coin has less wear on the smooth edge so it is a higher grade.

Second, the mold is a cleaner version with very smooth fields and significantly the much sharper details of the characters.

Finally, the Heritage coin has a significantly superior patina and greater eye appeal.

So to sum up - the three components of grade - Wear, "Strike" and Eye Appeal - are all present and much higher for the $3700 coin. It may simply be a RARE state of preservation as contrasted with a rare coin. This is certainly not a rare coin.

But how much does an MS70 1965 US 5 cent coin sell for and who would pay a premium for a Fine example of the same coin?
