I have about 42 "D" and 62 "P" - all made in 1979. How do I find out how much they are worth? Thanks!

Good news! They are worth a dollar each. That means you have $104.

Seriously though, unless they are supper great I doubt you'll get anything beyond their face value for them. I still get them in circulation.

Unfortunately, they're probably worth a dollar apiece unless they're a rare variety or in perfect gem condition. They were minted in large numbers and weren't heavily used, so the supply outstrips the collector demand. They can still be purchased from banks at face value.

Not so fast...1979-P Wide Rim DO command a premium;

1979-P Wide & Narrow Rim: These varieties are sometimes referred to as "Far Date" and "Near Date". This is actually inaccurate as the date was not moved, but instead the border was widened. The Mint began striking the 1979-P SBA Dollars with the "narrow rim". Late in 1979 the border was widened to give the coin a more aesthetic appearance. The "narrow rim" variety is found on all 1979 dollars from all of the mints. The 1979 "wide rim" variety can only be found on the "P" mint issues. The "wide rim" variety was used for the remainder of the series. According to information provided by George E. Hunter, the Assistant Director of Technology for the U.S. Mint at the time, there were 643 "wide rim" dies used at the Philadelphia Mint in 1979. With an estimated 250,000 strikes per die, that would give a mintage of 160,750,000 1979-P "Wide Rim" Susan B. Anthony dollars, or nearly 45% of all 1979-P Anthony Dollars minted.

I don't have data to negate the point of there being 45% wide rim 79P, except from roll searching. Roll searching suggests less than 1 out of 100 are wide rims. And they command quite steep premiums, suggesting they are not widespread. They may have had all those dies but perhaps a lot of the wide rims never got released due to there being so many earlier 79P backlogged? maybe some of the wide rims got melted?

There's a disconnect between the 45% wide rim figure and the premiums placed on the wide rim and what you see when you roll search. If 45% of the 79P are wide rim, the wide rim should also be worth about face value.

mycrob,
I would certainly agree with what you have posed...just passing along "other" info (not necessarily accurate).

Check the reverse of the coin for the strike quality. Most of these coins were poorly struck, so the talons of the eagle will be ill-defined or "blob-like." If the talons show sharp details, the coin will commabd a premium.

Everything said in this thread pretty much already answers the question. I hear all the time people wanting to know if their SBAs or IKEs are worth anything just because many people saved them and nobody uses them now, hence, the illusion of rarity.

I did want to ask mycrob, how have you roll searched SBAs. That's not even possible at any bank I know of. Maybe it was in 1999 and that's what you mean. hmmmm.

SBAs can still be found in circulated rolls mixed with Sackies and Pres dollars.

Before the Presidential dollars were released I was searching mixed dollar rolls, SAC and SBA. Since SAC is essentially a not intended for circulation (NIFC) coin from 2002-2008, I was searching up until the Presidential dollar series was released and getting a fair number of SBA and 2000 and 2001 SAC. And I would score occasional proofs, and NIFC SAC. I've accumulated some Wide rim 79P as a result. They are definitely not common and I think the premiums placed on them are correct.

They are worth one dollar apiece,spend them on some better coins! I have to say this again SBA's are the ugliest coins the US Mint has ever made!

They are indeed ugly, but Franklin halves are the worst I think. Ben's ugly mug and a big bell. Ike's bald head in the middle of the field is bad too, but his reverse is alright. Not as bad as what I have already mentioned, but I've personally never liked nickel 3-cent pieces either.

Appears no one wants to Welcom you so I will.
Possibly it's due to so many not liking those baby sized dollars. I know I sure hate them. Sorry.
