I'm sorry to say that you are the proud owner of a fake. There are only two obverses known for 1808. ne of them is an obvious overdate and on the other one the second 8 is made using the 0 punch from the fraction on the reverse. This isn't the overdate, and the 8 is not made from the 0 punch. Also the date figures are too small and I don't like the font. On the 1808 "regular" date the point of the 1 almost touches the curl. The reverse is also wrong. The reverse of the 1808 Half Cents has the gap between the ends of the wreath below the serif of the E. On your coin it's right of the serif of S. Also the digits in the fraction are too large for those used in 1808. So either it is a fake or you've got a brand new unknown variety with a new obv and reverse, but which somehow managed to use the obverse long enough to wear away the dentilation.

Wow! It's the big one Elizabeth! Thanks so much for your advice on this one. It'll be in the mail tomorrow back to the seller as I am still in the seven day window for returns..... PG

Yup, I am looking at my 1808 (the one with the 8 made from the 0's in the 1/200) and it doesn't look like yours. All the markers that Conder pointer out match on mine but not yours. There are plenty of other markers that separate your coin from a real 1808 HC, but it would be overkill to list them all here I think... :)
I always feel a little sick when I see a "replica" or fake like this...BLEH.

Holly fake Bat Man! My thoughts were that it just looked too good. It is good to have 1/2 cent enthusiasts who are in the know on this sight.

I never knew why the second 8 on my '08 Half Cent looked 'weird"! The "O" from the 200 on reverse?

Out of curiosity, why would someone go to the trouble to fake this coin? It isn't like a normal 1808 is an especially valuable coin. If I was going to the trouble to fake it I'd probably do an 1802, or at least do the overdate version of the 1808.

Saruma - still worth a bit in this condition if real, right? Collectors are going to be looking more carefully for fakes in the more expensive coins...but exactly as you pointed out, who is going to suspect a fake 1808 LC? The fakemakers are making their $$$ in littler bits me thinks;
