This was from one of the first lots of coins I had ever bought. Was concerned for quite some time it may have been a copper strike, however the weight is in between a 40% half and a copper half, so I don't really know what's going on with it. Is there a chance some idiot copper plated the thing, or is it just toning?

Wait - are you saying it's underweight for a 40% half? Otherwise I would say it's just dark toning.

I guess it could be plated, though I don't know why it would be copper plated. Usually you see gold plated clad halves, not silver ones. I also have one I think is chrome plated.

how accurate a scale are you using? To 0.01? .3 might be within tolerances if you've rounded up.

will weigh a few of mine...

i grabbed some 67's and here's one of the chunkier ones, with no toning he weighs in at a hefty 11.74g so I doubt yours is plated. just toned like george hamilton.

Makes sense ,it was in a roll with plenty of other 50s, I was told they had been saved a LONG time ago. I'm curious though what would cause this one, sitting in the middle of the roll to tone and the rest not to.

I've seen that redish tone on coins before. Usually the ones I've seen are from people attempting to clean them with dish soap and allowing them to dry with a film of soap on them. Some coins placed in an oven also have a tendancy to redden. It is odd that the reverse is so much more toned than the obverse.

Copper plating is not to possible here or both the front and backs would be equal. Plating is usually done on the entire coin. I would suspect toning but not sure if a natural toning.
