When gold dipped down below $1600 last week I decided to take the plunge and buy my very first gold coin. Since I have no idea if I'll ever be able to afford another gold coin (read "whether my wife will ever let me buy another"), I decided to buy the best one I could justify: I bought it raw, but supposedly it's supposed to be "AU or better." At first, I was a little disappointed because it was a bit smaller than I was expecting (I figured it would be the same size as a Morgan dollar). But when I held it in my hand I realized that it was significantly heavier than I expected, so that's all right.

Beautiful coin! I would like to get my hands on one of those but with the run up in the price of gold they have gotten a little bit too expensive for me.

I hear you! I convinced my wife that the recent dip in gold was temporary and that I should at least buy one nice coin before the prices went back up. If gold ever dips down to $1400, I might try and get a $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle. I'm not holding my breath, though...

The most beautiful coin ever made, IMHO.

Beautiful coin! I have a double eagle, but it is a Liberty Head. It is a great coin and I love having it, but a St. Gaudin's is a whole other level of beauty. I'm sure you'll be able to get another gold coin someday, but if you are going to start out with just one I think you made a great choice!

Wow! Tell the wife to take a rubber band and put it over her head and snap out of it! Just kidding. Good for both of you!

Where did you pick it up from if you don't mind me asking? Just curious where people buy more expensive pieces such as this from. It's a beauty!

I bought it from APMEX. By the time I figured in the shipping costs and the wire transfer fee (on top of the rather stiff premium over spot value for a numismatic coin), it didn't seem like such a great bargain (at least, not to my wife). Basically, I ended up paying around $1840 for a 1 ounce gold coin when gold was at $1600/ounce. Still, I'm not complaining!

I bet it will be a heir-loom. What a great treasure.

Congratulations on a beautiful coin. Hang on to it if you can and most likely the price you paid will seem cheap in 10 years. They are beautiful coins and always in demand.

That is a beauty! Earlier this summer when gold was at $1600 I was just about to take the plunge but I decided to wait and I regretted it, but now that its almost back to $1600 I am seriously thinking about doing it. Im thinking about the earlier double eagle or this style. Thanks for giving me some motivation!

Really nice. Can you imagine telling someone back in the early 20's or even the 30's that you paid that much for a coin? Evem odder would be to tell someone in the 1800's about the prices of that coin.

Don't mean to hijack this thread just_carl but gold was actually pretty stable through the 1800s up til the early 1930s when the government confiscated all the Gold and Gold Certificates. So, 1920s or 1800s would be about the same.
