A few days ago when the chill of Fall was persuading me against leaving the house I decided to organize my father's collection of Newfoundland Halves, as this is the most substantial and impressive component of his coin holdings.

The list is as elegant as I could make it being so long out of practice with Excel. I've indicated the quantity of each year including a breakdown of the grades. None of these coins have been professionally graded so I had to go on the handwritten indications from the dealers. For many years you will see one or more coins listed as "TBD". This means that some of the coins were not marked and will have to be examined when I have the time.

My father was pleased to learn he has 19 1888s. That year holds significance not only as the birth year of his grandfather but as the year with the smallest mintage of which he would like to own 1/10 of 1% - an achievement which is one coin away. I believe my favorite to be the 1876 in VF. Enjoy.

PS:

I realize this is not the easiest chart to read; the format on my spreadsheet was not quite preserved in my post.

Newfoundland Half Collection

Year Mintage Quantity Grading/Notes
1870 50000 4 (VG, VG+, VF, TBD)
1872 48000 1 (TBD)

1882 100000 4 (VG, VG-F, F, TBD)
1885 40000 4 (VG (x3), TBD)
1888 20000 19 (G (x2), VG-8, VG, F-12 (x2), F-15, F, VF (x2), TBD (x9))
1894 40000 5 (F+, TBD (x4))
1896 60000 3 (VG, TBD (x2))
1898 76607 6 (TBD (x6))

to the forum.

I must admit that this is a very impressive collection of Newfie half dollars, perhaps I have heard of outside of NFLD.
It sure would be nice to see some pics of these and I wonder, do you think the collection is liable to be expanded upon, if so, I hope you keep us all here updated..

This is a nice collection. I hope that you read the rules and are not attempting to sell here. This is not permitted.

Thanks for the welcomes. To the last post, I thought I made it clear this is not my collection. These are "our" coins only in the colloquial sense. Please indicate where in my post I hint at the possibility that 'any' of these coins are for sale. All I'm trying to do here is demonstrate the fruits of a great collecting labor. If I were attempting to sell 171 coins, don't you think more than one of them would be pictured?

I've been enjoying this forum from the moment I found it but I take great exception to this unwarranted scrutiny I've received after only one post. Nothing is for sale. Thanks again for the other kind, welcoming posts.

When you took the pictures of the front and back of the coin, both images were on a background that gave a dollar amount. As this was your first post, I felt that it was in the best interests of our members to question this and request that you post pictures without a dollar amount showing in the images. This is a reasonable request and, if you think about it, I'm sure you could see how this could appear suspicious.

If you are not looking to sell, then posting images without dollar amounts should not be a problem. We have many people who join and immediately try to sell. It is for the safety of our members that any post that could be construed as a possible attempt to sell without fulfilling the rule requirements is questioned. This was not done to offend you.

As a member of our community, you are one of the members that we strive to protect when new members have been questioned about first posts that could be questionable. You are not the first and will definitely not be the last. I hope you understand.

What varieties are your 1896, 1898 and 1899 halves?
