Hello I came across a 1974 silver penny without a d,s,or p on it. It
looks like it is in mint condition. It does not have copy on it, but what puzzles me when I took it to be weighed it was 3.5 grams. The coin dealer said it was odd. It is not shiny or slippery. Could this be an accident or the real thing? I read back in 1973 they experimented with various metals besides aluminum. Could this coin be worth anything even if I find out it's not the actual 1974 aluminum penny.

If it was aluminum it would be lighter than a copper penny.

lead is easy to melt (i have done it a stove in pot) then dip the penny?...
Lead coated copper penny would weigh about 3.5 grams.

Industrial hard chrome plating looks just like the picture and matches your physical description. That would be my guess

Is it true that the obverse die for the aluminum cents was also used for the regular copper cents? Because I noticed that 1974 coppers have two different busts, a high-relief detailed one (I think this is the alum obv one) and a flatter, less detailed one.

Two are known, one example in the National Numismatic Collection and the Toven Specimen posted by vermontensium. It is named after a Capitol Police Officer who purportedly received it from a Congressman and it is the only confirmed example in private hands.

Two types exist for 1974, Large Date and Small Date. Aluminum cents and proofs are of the Large Date type and both types are equally prevalent for copper business strikes.
