I'm mostly a US coin collector, but I saw an auction image (and price) for a Gothic Crown and discovered simultaneously that I want one and can't have one. But then I found out that a Gothic Florin is probably within reach and is roughly the same design, though smaller. I would like to acquire a nice uncirculated type example. How much should I expect to pay? Are there any bugaboos I should watch out for? Are they frequently counterfeited or anything?

The big question that one..
How much you pay is entirely up to you.
Pay what you can most afford is the answer.
Get a coin in the best possible condition for your $'s.
If you're looking on ebay, steer clear of the high priced buy it nows, and watch a good "auction" based example.
A nice EF or better I would expect to pay $200-$300+ and unc double that.
Be warned of the sellers judgement on grades and use your own. Ask for better scans/pics if the one supplied is crap!
The 1st place to plonk your eyes on is the hair braiding just to the left of Victoria's ear. This shouldn't appear "flat" and will only just show the slightest of wear in EF. The reverse side, check the lions faces. These are possibly the easiest places to look for wear as the nose and eyes will wear 1st.
Good dates?.. All of them. most popular, 1849.Known as the "Godless" florin. No DG for DEI GRA "by the grace of god"
Comes in variations but a "WW" obliterated will have a better resale appeal. What's "WW" obliterated?.. The Disigner William Wyon placed his innitials at the bottom, right of Vicky's shoulder below the date, but an alternative beading arrangement all but hid the WW.
A few years extract a premium, notably.. 1850,1877 & 1879
Like I mentioned, all years are good so it's all about good judgement on condition.
Great coins and I have lots of them in my collection,so good luck.
Nearly forgot.. No issues with forgeries on these that I'm aware of. Too intricate and not quite enough value yet to warrant it. Unlike the Gothic crown, the valuable Florins are quite rare and Forgeries would very quickly be eliminated as well as scrutinised at every point.

Thanks! I saw this one on eBay but decided to hold off on bidding until I knew more. Other than clearly having eye appeal, it was impossible to grade from the pictures anyway.

I might actually save up for a nice graded MS coin. Looking at the Heritage archives, it seems like I could save up for a nice showy MS63 or even MS64 or whatever the equivalent is for British coins.

The problem with Gothic Florins is that in Uncirculated or higher, they are still pricey but still less than the crown fortunately.
The reason for this is that they replaced the half crown in issue, and thus saw heavy circulation, making the top grade Gothics rare.

Still if you get one in top condition you should be pleased.
The artwork is superb, despite it being a little over floriate.

Perhaps that is why they called it a 'Florin', and how the design was inspired.

Yeah, I'd love the crown, but it'd set me back 10 times or more as much as a similar condition florin.

I do like the how busy the design is, which is part of what gives it that intricate Gothic revival look. I actually like the Godless version less because it's got less text and is less busy.

The florin on the left ('britt'') has a large edge while the other one (''brit'') has a narrow and bumpy edge from 9 to 10 o'clock.

Is the one on the right suspect? Denticles (not sure if that is what they are called) are quite blurry.

Hi there, I'm going to correct the poster petesabout on 2 points. There IS a known fake of an 1864 florin with the die number 64.

The 2nd wrong info he gave is that there is actually no 1850 florins minted for circulation, perhaps he was thinking of the 1850 shilling, a florin is 2 shillings. Florin prices for top grades are certainly on the rise, $200-$300 might be ok for a NEF grade but getting into the top end depending how top end you're looking at will cost more.

Somewhat similar design used in India, but it isn't nearly as intricate or as appealing imo.

The coin was graded as MS65 by PCGS (finest known)
