Very nice coin, looks as big as a Morgan.
How much did you pay, my guess $600

A very nice looking coin with just the unfortunate scratch that Liberty will be staring at for a long time. Nice pickup!

Problem free XF40 in Numismedia is north of $6,000.. I'd buy them all for $600 :)
Nice coin - bet you cant wait to have it in your hands.

Looks more like VF-30 details, but if this date normally has weak detail then maybe XF is technically correct. That scratch would bother me but if the price is right and you like it, then why not? It's a very tough hole to fill in a type set.
Love that repunched letter R in LIBERTY!

I got him down to $1500; the scratch doesn't bother me mostly because this is not a type set coin but rather for a dimes 1796-1840 set. Stuff doesn't stand out as much. Because of that I'm a lot more liberal about what I put in the album when I'm very picky about my type set stuff (along with the fact that I don't have the money to spend $5000 a coin). That pickyness is the reason why I don't have the classic head large cent hole filled in the type album, and why it took me forever to fill the Seated dollar slot. I'm also hoping its not so prominent against the color of this coin in hand. What I'm mostly doing is getting lightly damaged coins in better grade rather than problem free ag/G's....but I can't afford problem free VF-XF's. They're good value too, at often only 25-35% of problem free grade (especially with slight bends which are the best type of 'damage' if they are the sole issue, since they can't be seen in an album). Well I could spend $5000 a coin, but then I'd only have a few coins. Based on heritage coins, this price seemed pretty good and $1500 is even better. Lastly, I thought that it might grade around VF-30/35 for detail but the reverse having more detailed seems to hint at an XF coin that has a striking issue...as many of these do. I just gotta send him a $100 down payment and we are set! After I buy my car I'll sell a bunch of stuff to get this paid, then we'll see what it looks like in hand. Probably 4-6 weeks max.

Regarding the comment about bent coins: on rare occasions this problem can be fixed! I have a Half Dime that was bowed such that the obverse bulged out and the reverse was slightly concave. The coin would rock back and forth if placed obverse-side down on a flat surface. I fixed it by putting it between two pieces of leather, then two thick sheets of hard rubber, then two flat steel plates. I put the whole assembly under the ram of a benchtop arbor press. After applying about two hundred pounds of force on the handle the coin was flat. I sent it to PCGS and they graded it MS-63.

Oh yeah, I remember that thread! I tried that foolishly under a book with a F-12 common date bust dime and got areas where it rubbed and turned white, LOL.

I am finally getting this coin paid off and shipped to me! It should be here soon. New bills made it difficult but I finally am going to submit the last payment.

Jaobler, your coin was obviously an MS coin, no matter what they said the "problem" was. I have a VG+ 1800 LIBEKTY Draped Bust Half Dime which PCGS...designated as "bent". Smooth spots @ 2 & 5 would indicate, IMO, dents to the reverse. I have been doing this long enough to notice this. Think it would work on this coin?
