The coin looks not too bad, and the mintage is pretty low. I am just hesitating because of the ~15% sales tax hit I need to take. Anyone else considering buying this coin?

I personally think that the only value for buying the Gretzky gold coin other then melt would be if you did buy one and the COA was number 99!
Of course, they will probably pluck that coin off the production line and give it to Wayne personally.
Wouldnt that be a great find?

Gold content is currently @ 807 CAD

This coin has a $500 premium + TAX as you mentioned, or about 40% of the cost which is within typical ranges for NCLT (gross margins).

It is not the prettiest NCLT coin - that's for sure. And, pardon my ignorance, but I read the description and I still don't know exactly what it is supposed to commemorate.

For anyone that doesn't mind signing up for the Mint newsletters, there is a Gretzky coin contest to win the gold coin or one of the other Gretzky coins. I like free stuff.

Why isn't there a Stanley Cup coin, and a series of all the winners? Messier on a coin hoisting it over his head.....

^The Mint is probably too cheap to pay the NHL for the licensing agreement, but it would be neat to have a 100 different quarter designs for all of the Stanley Cup Champions, or Canadian HoF'ers. The Mint's new engraving technology would allow them to make more designs more often at a reasonable cost.
