I couldn't get the kids interested in collecting but our pet sure thinks quarters are cool. I have to chase her down if she grabs any with zinc and I am not too keen on letting her play with the others for more than a few seconds. Now if I could only teach her to sort by date and mint...

Aww very nice. I'm a sucker for birds, parrots in particular. I have a Quaker parrot and he just loves quarters as well, also nickels (but I don't give dimes- too small for him). Thanks for sharing!

It's funny - her cage is right next to my desk where I often look through my coins. She watches me intently while I use a magnifier on them, flies over, sits on my knee or shoulder, then grabs one and looks/plays with it or, as in this case, flies back to her cage with it. She LOVES Ikes!

They are some of the BEST escape artists.
Our African Gray could whistle and talk IDENTICAL as my mom....good enough that the german shepherd believed it.

A buddy of mine had his parrot in the same room with a police scanner. After about 2 weeks you couldn't tell the difference between the bird and the scanner. He had it down perfectly, right down to common phrases including the number language (10-4), alpha words (Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot), beeps, and even static.

What is her name and how long have you had her? Don't African Greys live like 60 years?

Name Willow Age: 4yrs - we've had her since she was about 8 weeks
We also have a female Medium Sulfur Crested Cockatoo - 9yrs
And a Male Eclectus - 7yrs
They all talk, the Cockatoo not as well as the others.
The Eclectus used to call one of the dogs and verbally keep her "prisoner" when we (the parents) left home.
They can live to be 80.
We expect our children to care for them when we are gone and then maybe grandchildren if they live that long.
Believe me, I don't think the grey not being able to tell me the dates and mint marks is her fault - I just don't know how to teach her. She is always interested in the coins - the others not so much.

Oh and by the way => The Northern Manitoba Raven is by far the smartest bird on the planet ... it has learned how to bounce up-n-down on my garbage can lids, then it spreads my garbage across the nighborhood but has never been caught be any of the numerous neighborhood cats (well, I guess the cats are kind of afraid of the Ravens, since they're at least twice their size!) ... anyway ...
just kidding => obviously your cute grey bird is a dear family pet (it's an awesome thread)

Quote: I have a Quaker parrot and he just loves quarters as well, also nickels (but I don't give dimes- too small for him). Quakers are neat - I like their calls. They are outlawed to own here. Please don't ask where - I will not answer. Quote: Hey wait a minute => are you feeding that bird Canadian quarters! (our money is on par with yours lately!)
; ) I did a quick search on CA quarters and found that they don't contain zinc so not necessarily bad for birds to play with. I am just paranoid about her chewing on metal. Zinc kills birds. Quote: Oh and by the way => The Northern Manitoba Raven is by far the smartest bird on the planet ... I take no offense. I used to think birds were basically flitty creatures and that people anthropomorphized their behavior. (I got that long, almost unpronounceable, word from an English prof recently and had to look it up to find out what it meant - still not sure I am using it correctly but oh well. Have fun with it while you can. Learn something new every day even if you are older than dirt like me.) I now know from personal experience that birds who can mimic our language do have the ability to know exactly what they are saying and are not necessarily just "parroting" what they hear. They use their words in context if properly taught and will create new words to convey their thoughts. This led me to a greater appreciation of even the annoying Ravens and Crows. Anyway back to coins... It took me a few weeks to catch a good photo of Willow grading a coin. I am going to try to get some more and will post them here but you will have to be really patient.
