Lately I've been building a set of Bust Halfs, as a counterpoint to my obsession with 1921 Morgans. I'm looking for VF-ish examples, with nice original skin, and they're not as easily found as I thought they'd be. Well, 1834 is a date I've lacked, and last night I found a couple of likely candidates on ebay. One Small Date/Letters, and one Large Date/Letters. "What the heck," I figured, "might as well have a snipe at both, and hope I win one." The auctions ended after my (early) bedtime, so I set things up at Auction Sniper and went to bed.

I won both auctions. Now what?

Below are the auction shots, Large Letters example first. Would you agree with me that VF25-30 fits these guys? The only problem is, now, if I keep them both I have to start collecting varieties, too....

Oh my, what a horrible situation to be in!!! One I'm sure the rest of us would like to join you in. Keep them both, 2 beats 1 anytime. Grade I don't know enough about to even hazzard a guess. Very nice.

I would agree that they are VF examples. ANA grading standards says half feather details are visible when its a Fine. Both of these examples have almost all of the feather detail visible. The obverse clearly shows the clasp and enough hair detail to qualify for VF.

The color is original as well.

Nice Capped Busts.

WTG Dave, that dosn't happen to often.Very nice coins. I can solve your two coin problem......my birthday's in 11 months.

Speaking of sniping.I put a snipe bid in on 6 Morgans that were ending in the middle of the day yesterday.I won 4 of them.

Well, we know why they say "Be careful of what you ask for....you might get it."

I'm a little worried about the surfaces on the Small Letters example - it might be a little light. The pics resolved properly in Photoshop, though. I'll post my own pics here when they arrive.

Dave - if it were me, I'd keep them both, but, if you feel you need to choose just one, and I were in your shoes, I believe, based on appearance of the photos, my choice would be the large letter variety. I like the way it looks more than the small letters variety.
Is the reverse rotated on the small letters coin?

Nice scores Dave !!! Definitely VF's and they sure look "original" too.

I agree with Ralph - I'd keep 'em both, but that's just me.
If you really have a problem keeping both, lemme know. I've just begun the Bust Half endeavor, and I don't have either of those yet
